In the Texas Hill Country, our oak forests have suffered greatly from years of severe drought. Millions of majestic Live Oak trees have been lost due to lack of water. Most of these trees are bulldozed to clear land for new subdivisions or discarded in landfills. Although I do work with many other species (i.e. walnut, cherry, mahogany, purpleheart, padauk, etc.) I prefer to use these dead and abandoned trees for my work. Live Oak is an incredibly strong, weather-resistant and beautiful wood that is a joy to craft. Its unique qualities allow for carvings that highlight sharp, crisp designs that just aren’t found in any other wood species. The wood’s closed grain and rich brown-golden tones truly come alive when finished.
